HOW TO HANDLE YOUR CHILD’S TANTRUMS IN PUBLIC

It’s 2022 and children are still … well children. And yes! Child tantrums are still a thing.  Children have no concept of ‘log kya kahengy’ at a young age and so it’s a bit difficult for them to behave as society wants and expects them to. They are free-spirited and loud … so very LOUD. Have you ever travelled on a bus with a child on board? No? Good for you, I guess.

Children can be adorable one minute and be throwing the world’s biggest tantrum the next – there’s just no in-between. And I think we are all too familiar with the type of children who just lay on the floor and cry in public to get what they want. So how do handle such child tantrums in public?

We’re here to talk about that.

STEP 1: BE GENTLE

The first and most important thing to do is that you yourself don’t lose your temper with a child. Hitting a child has never helped anyone – the parents, bystanders or the public. So always be gentle in such situations. Be kind and talk with a Zen mindset. Try to talk to your child.

STEP 2: UNDERSTAND YOUR CHILD’S TANTRUM

If your kid is throwing a tantrum, there’s surely a reason behind it. What is triggering this tantrum? Is there a toy the child saw that you said no to hurriedly or does the kid need to go to the bathroom? Did someone else trigger it? There are so many layers you need to keep in mind when trying to combat this situation.

STEP 3: GIVE INCENTIVES

Once you have understood the reason, the best thing you can do to make them stop is offer an incentive. It will be something along the lines of a ‘this and that’ game. They want one thing but you tell them that if they stop now you’ll get them something better. Like if they want an expensive toy that you know they will break for sure – tell them that instead of that you’ll take them to the park on your way back. Park or McDonald’s play area whatever they like.

STEP 4: KEEP THEIR FAVOURITE SNACK IN YOUR BAG

To end this negotiation on a good note, always keep your child’s favourite snack in your bag. If they were just hungry – step 4 becomes step 3 but if it was something else and you had them agree on something else, give them a peace offering. This will boost their mood and leave them feeling good. When done enough times, they will start thinking that when they discuss something instead of just throwing tantrums they end up feeling good.

CONCLUSION

Having kids is a great responsibility. So if you have taken this on the best step forward is to be their friends and have a democratic environment at your home rather than a dictatorship. The environment a child grows in affects their personality greatly.
