Being a part of big brown desi family system, a lot of my loved ones and extended family members have strong opinions about therapy (good and bad), and yet neither one single person has ever seen a therapist. I’ve heard anthems of stereotypes like “get married” or “have a baby”, and “how can I share my deepest thoughts with a stranger?”
Then there are those people who love therapy and it loves them back – yes!
I can list people who have preconceived notions about therapy because there is so much that they don’t know, and aren’t willing to learn about it.
5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THERAPY
- Therapy will only work if YOU partake do the work!
. - Sometimes you may have to “shop” for a compatible therapist who fits your needs and matches your personality. You may not feel an instant connection and sometimes it will take one or more than a few sessions.
. - Leave those stereotypes and stigmas at the door! Err! Unless you’ve personally experienced it, all that unwanted/unwarranted judgement is just OPINIONS!.
. - Learning to be open-minded, vulnerable + willing, and accepting of what is and how to work through everything helps you during your journey towards healing.
. - Therapy is for everyone! And no you do not have to be in a dark place to attend it. Happy people seek help also. Whatever makes you comfortable and at peace with yourself.
If you do decide to take therapy, here’s what you should expect in the first session.
